Researching Health Information Online Disclaimer: Please consult with a doctor about any health condition and be very careful when considering any health advice found online. This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Many people use the Internet to research health conditions and treatment options. There are millions of web sites with information about traditional (also known as allopathic) approaches as well as so-called alternative medicine. Doctors who include both approaches in their treatment strategies are said to practice complementary or integrated medicine. Most people start their research by typing a few words about their health condition or concern into Google. This can be a good place to start, however much of the health information online is of questionable value. Many health professionals have expressed concern that patients are self diagnosing and trying potentially harmful remedies as a result of online searches. For example, it is important to be very careful when consulting sites that are selling something. Many web sites that list "miracle cures" are run by the modern equivalent of snake oil salesmen who are primarily out to make money. Though some pills and powders are useful, buyer beware applies very strongly online. Doctors are knowledgeable, however with so many patients coming and going they often do not have time to keep up on the latest medical research developments and discoveries, especially with unusual conditions. A good doctor will be open to reviewing printouts of sites you have found that you think might be relevant. Organize the information you have to save time during your appointment and do your best to use reputable medical sources (such as sites from hospitals and medical journal citations.) Even when consulting official medical studies it is important to be careful and not believe everything you read. Just because something is "science" doesn't necessarily make it true. How the study was done and who paid for it can affect results. Though it is important to get a proper diagnosis of a medical condition from a health professional, online research can help you become more informed and receive better treatment. There are also many support groups for patients (and families of patients) with specific conditions which can help greatly with the emotional and other aspects of dealing with disease.
