Online Resources for Birdwatchers

The Internet provides a vast wealth of information about birds and birdwatching. A Google search on birdwatching brings back over three million results! It can be overwhelming to know where to start.

If you are looking for a picture of a specific type of bird, try going to Google Images and typing in the bird's name. Below is an example of image results for a search on yellow warbler.

Google Images works by finding images from websites that a computer program decides are likely to match your search terms, though not every image retrieved will necessarily be relevant. If you click on a specific image, you will be shown the image in context on its webpage with a Google branded header bar above it. To remove this header bar, click on the Remove Frame link in the upper right hand corner of the screen. To see the image alone, click on the See full-size image link at the upper left. To save this image, choose "file" then "save" from your browser's menu. This type of search can be very useful for finding images to decorate your desktop or for species identification. Note that these images are often copyrighted and you do not necessarily have the right to reprint them. Contact the owner of the website you found the picture on to ask for permission.

To find field guide style information about a specific bird, try a search for the bird's name in Google combined with the word habitat. To find a specific bird sound, try searching for the name of the bird combined with the word listen or the word song.

There are also many excellent bird reference sites and directories out there which may be even better places to start searching for bird information than Google depending on what you are looking for. Some of the most comprehensive and interesting ones are listed below.
